With the launch of Denon's latest advanced A/V receivers, BDC Sales & systems designer Art DiScala was able to hear Audyssey MultEQ XT and Dynamic EQ for the first time, and discovered the value of introducing the Audyssey Installer Program to his customers.
Art tells his story:
How did you first hear about Audyssey?
I heard about you a year or so before Audyssey actually got into the Denon line, but I didn't know much about it. Once I saw Audyssey in the Denon line, I did some research and found out what Audyssey was all about.
When you first heard MultEQ, were you at an installation or were you at a demo at a store?
I was actually in my own house. I upgraded to a new Denon receiver and it sounded better than the old one, then I used the consumer setup of MultEQ XT and the sound quality just kept getting better. Using the Audyssey calibration made a big jump in performance.
How was the setup for you?
Very simple. Not too time consuming, pretty much anybody can do it.
When did you first hear about our professional installer application, MultEQ Pro?
I heard the demos at Denon in New Jersey. I also saw the demos at CEDIA. Those are all fine, but it doesn't really catch you until you get a MultEQ Pro calibration into your own house and your own room, where you know the sound quality that you've been experiencing for years. I know my room is very acoustically challenged, but when I calibrated my system with MultEQ Pro, it brought me to a totally different world.
What specifically impresses you about a MultEQ Pro calibration?
A MultEQ Pro calibration is in a class of its own. It is a waste of money if people don't use the Audyssey technologies on their receiver. It really is. It takes the sound of your system to a whole new level. It really centralizes the sound and helps to keep the sound where it seemed to belong.
I also like the idea that a MultEQ Pro calibration saves time on the installation. Typically, you need to measure the speaker distances' and use an SPL meter for each of the speakers. All of this is done automatically in a MultEQ Pro calibration. For most installers, that's going to be one of the biggest benefits for them.
You've also had the chance to hear Dynamic EQ. What are your thoughts?
When you have your theater set up in your living room and the kids are sleeping, you need to turn the volume low. The biggest drawback to low volume is you lose the mid and the low end as well the surround sound. So, the sound quality drops dramatically. With Dynamic EQ, you actually get the same performance at extremely low volumes as you would get at high volumes. You get the bass, you get the thumps, you get the explosions, and the surround sound truly envelops you. Without Dynamic EQ, you wouldn't think you even had surround sound with the volume low. Now, with the Dynamic EQ and a MultEQ Pro calibration, you actually hear the surround continuously. You're always hearing the effects. It's a really nice change.
Final thoughts?
Once people get a MultEQ Pro calibration, it's really gonna speak for itself. Any install I do, there's no chance I wouldn't utilize Audyssey. No way. My client wouldn't have a choice. It just makes that much of a difference.
