Treasure Island Music Festival 2011

While the Treasure Island Music Festival is just four years old, Treasure Island itself has been around since 1938. It was plopped in a shallow part of the San Francisco Bay and deemed unsafe for boaters, yet perfect for land loving developers who thought it would make a great place for an international airport. They brought the dirt and the first big exhibit to pay for it all, the Golden Gate International Exposition. In the Expo’s final week, an enormous concert was held, featuring Judy Garland, Johnny Mercer and Irving Berlin. Then came WWII and the island, for civilians, went quiet.

The Treasure Island Music Festival breathes life back to this cool locale by bringing back the music, the arts, the food and the sense of promise for which the island was built in the first place.

Performers will be either on the Bridge Stage or the Tunnel Stage and, although the events are staggered, half of the fun will be trying to decide which act to catch. Be sure to text SFEVENTS to 64671 for festival alerts, the key to staying in-the-know throughout the festival. Also check Audyssey’s The Neighborhood where we have videos from seven of the bands featured this year.

The big draws include: Death Cab for Cutie, Empire of the Sun, Cut Copy and Explosions in the Sky. But with some 27 bands in the lineup, you are sure to enjoy tunes all weekend long. And the Music Festival has a ton of other treasures to share.

Some of the offbeat attractions we are interested in seeing this year include the Silent Disco being held at The Cove, where DJs broadcast danceable beats straight to your headphoned ears and Madu Salon. The salon not only provides complimentary cuts and trims, but also burlesque acts from both coasts who promise to do their best to keep you laughing.

Of course, you can’t miss the Ferris Wheel. Audyssey is partnering with The Bay Bridged to offer you a free ride in exchange for a funny music confession or anecdote. It is also where all of the food trucks will be parked, making it the perfect meet-up point.

There is much, much more and you can learn all the details at www.treasureislandfestival.com or get your ticket and get in on the fun yourself.
